#100daysofpractice Day 12: two minutes of improvisation. After many days of dealing with written or otherwise pre-existing music, here's a change of pace and letting my hands and my ears take over. Maybe the seeds of a composition are in here, maybe not; hopefully this will unblock those muscles.
Day 11 of #100daysofpractice: blowing off some steam on an F blues with one of my favourite drummers. Drums from @looploft @johnnyvidacovich; walking bass on the @arturia_official B3 (volume 2).
Those are not leaves, those are crows. Sleeping in the barren trees in -10ºC.
#100daysofpractice day 7: first Loop Sessions of the year for me, at @loopsessionsdmv! It took me a while to find my way into this crate, but once I latched onto an idea, it worked itself out rather quickly. I programmed the majority of it this morning, took a break and left the house, and came back to mix it and add some spice. Tune into the IG live tonight to hear the whole thing, or check the SoundCloud playlist!
Bach Invention No. 2 in C minor. This might be the first time I've ever posted myself playing Baroque or Western European Classical music online. Usually this stuff stays in my practice room – and even then, when I was in university, I would feel self-conscious practicing material that any decent classical pianist can ace in their sleep. I go back to advice I got from the great Uri Caine many years ago: I'm doing this for my own self-improvement and education, not to get it to performance level, so take that extra level of stress off and just go into the music.
#100daysofpractice Day 5: changing pace and going back into the foundation of everything piano, J.S. Bach. I never tackled this material when I was younger, and I feel the ramifications of that now. As I've grown up (gotten older), I can hear the musicality and the structural clarity in it now; when I was a kid it just felt like scales and exercises.
Next Saturday! My first solo DJ gig in a long while. I’m happy to be the soundtrack for your studying, your grading, and/or your enjoyment of the finest natas in town.
It's been a pleasure to be in the rehearsal space of @placedesarts once again this week, working on bassist Dylan Kell-Kirkman's arrangements of Serge Gainsbourg, with our longtime @kalmunity brethren Jahsun and Fabrice Koffy. Stay tuned for more developments on this salute to Gainsbourg's reggae period!
